Periodontal Routine Cleanings

Periodontal Routine Cleanings

Regular periodontal cleanings are essential for maintaining a healthy mouth. Routine cleanings at least four times a year allow us to get a complete picture of a patient’s mouth health by checking gum pocket depth and removing plaque and tartar that’s difficult to clean at home with regular brushing and flossing. Following the cleaning and exam, we discuss an at home routine to maintain healthy oral hygiene between visits.

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Scaling and root planing is more intensive than routine cleanings, but is among the more conservative treatments for periodontal/gum disease. Scaling effectively removes the plaque and tartar that attaches to teeth surfaces along the root, below the line of the gums. Following the scaling, root planing smooths irregular areas on the surface of the root and removes remaining tartar, which helps prevent future bacteria attachment. This type of treatment is effective on gingivitis and can take multiple visits.

Diagnostic X-Rays

Diagnostic X-Rays

Diagnostic x-rays reveal information impossible to see during a regular dental exam and help us pinpoint problem areas in your mouth. Dental issues shown on x-rays include gum disease, abscesses or cysts, bone infection or loss, abnormal tooth development, improper root and tooth locations, and tumors. The frequency of x-rays depends on medical and dental history, family history, and a patient’s age.

Tooth Polishing

Tooth Polishing

Daily wear and consuming certain food and drink can lead to discolored and stained teeth. Tooth polishing follows tartar removal and involves using an abrasive polishing compound on small, motorized rubber cup to polish teeth and prevent future plaque accumulation. By smoothing the surface of the teeth, tooth polishing restores their stunning shine and erases stains.
